  4. To make the frosting, beat cream cheese & butter in a small mixing bowl. Add vanilla & confectioners' sugar. Mix throughly. Spread over cooled cookies.

In a separate bowl sift the flour, baking soda and salt. Add the flour mixture to the creamed mixture. In a large mixing bowl, cream shortening and brown sugar. Combine the flour, baking soda and salt; gradually add to creamed mixture and mix well. Remove to wire racks to cool.
